Air pollution
- Presence of any substance in air generated by activities of man
- In a concentration that interferes with human health or comfort
- Injurious to animal/plant kingdom directly/indirectly.

Air pollutants
Pollutants can be classified as either primary or secondary.
Primary & Secondary Air Pollutants. |
a) Primary pollutants
- Sulfur oxides (SOx)—Especially sulfur dioxide, is produced by volcanoes
- and in various industrial processes. Coal and petroleum often contain sulfur compounds, their combustion generates sulfur dioxide.
- Nitrogen oxides (NOx)—Especially nitrogen dioxide can be seen as the brown haze above industrial cities.
- Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless, nonirritating but very poisonous Gas.
- Carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas emitted from combustion but is also a gas vital to living organisms.
- Methane is an extremely efficient greenhouse gas.
- Other volatile compounds such as the aromatic compounds benzene, toluene and xylene are suspected carcinogens and may lead to leukemia through prolonged exposure.
- Toxic metals, such as lead, cadmium and copper-generated from plastic, paint and metal industries.
- Ammonia is emitted from agricultural processes.
b) Secondary pollutants
- Particulate matter formed from gaseous primary pollutants and compound in photochemical smog. Smog is a portmanteau of smoke and fog.
- Ground level ozone formed from nitrogen oxides and volatile organic compounds. Ground level ozone is a component of smog.
- Peroxyacetyl nitrate (PAN)—Similarly formed from nitrogen oxides and volatile organic compounds.
Air pollution index (Air Testing)
- SO2
- Smoke/soiling indicator
- Haze coefficient.
- Smoke filtration,
- Trees for suspending the dust particles in air
These technique are used for air prevention index.
